The ranch is often home to a wide range of trails and paths. These may range from naturally formed private trails which have emerged over time to purposely built public trails. The trails may also be used for a wide range of purposes included walking trails, horse trails, OTV/ATV trails, livestock trails, etc.

Temporary Paths & Trails

There are times when you may need temporary paths or trails installed on your ranch. This may be to protect the landscape through a wet spring, to provide secure footing in a temporary work area, to keep guests high and dry at your event, or even as a heavy-duty boot-scraping door mat. Simply assemble the grid and lay it directly on top of the ground.

EcoRaster for Paths & Trails

Scrape away top soil to depth required. Grade sub-base so it drains towards the sides of the path or trail. If the existing ground is soft install a layer of geotextile. Geotextile will stop the gravel from sinking into the ground below and provide better support for the trail.  If drainage is an issue install a layer of course gravel. In extreme cases additional drainage measures may be required such as the installation of French drains. A thin layer of stone chips can be laid on top of the gravel to create a smooth uniform surface to lay the EcoRaster (optional). Lay EcoRaster on top and fill with stone chips or alternate fill.

If you are considering the grass option please note that the finished surface of the grass (where the grass and roots meet) should be below the top level of the EcoRaster. Turnpike

The Turnpike method is used primarily in flat areas (0 to 10% trail grade, 0 to 20% side slope). The goal of this design is to lower the water level below the trail base. The fill removed to create the ditches is used to create and raise the trail base above the surrounding grade. Firm course grained soils or granular material are recommended for the fill.

Mark out  the edges of your path to include the inside edges of your proposed ditches. Try and keep the path as straight as possible to deter users from cutting corners and damaging the installation. Lay geosynthetic in place. Use rocks (more durable) or logs to define the edge and hold trail materials in place. If using logs we recommend logs are fastened together and staked to the subgrade. Dig ditches along the outside edge of the geotextile and use base material as the base fill of the new elevated path. The base material should be graded to slope 1 to 2 % towards the side ditches. Lay the EcoRaster on top of the fill. The top of the Ecoraster should be flush with the top  of the log/rock side supports. Fill the EcoRaster grid to the top with remaining fill. When possible provide a ditch to carry water away from the path.

EcoRaster Causeway Trail

The causeway technique, like the turnpike method, elevates the pathway above the surrounding ground. This design is often installed over existing pathways that have become worn and rutted.

Remove mud and unstable soil from existing pathway. For greater stability and lower maintenance lay a layer of Geotextile. Line the edge of the path with stones or interlocked and staked logs. Fill with coarse gravel. Lay EcoRaster on top and fill with stone chips.
